My most recent bike trip to Wuyishan wasn’t quite the trip I had envisioned. The weather turned out to be much rainier than had been forecast and some heavy rains and a cancellation meant that the number of attractions that I got to see at the park were quite a lot less than I had planned. That being said, a disappointing bike trip is still better than most anything else I know.
Unlike my previous trip to Sanming, where the beauty of the country was so in your face that at times it was nearly overwhelming, the beauty along this trail was subtle and at times needed to be sought out. But it was still there.
Another significant difference between the two trips was the weather. On the trip to Sanming I was drenched in the bright, blistering sun with temperatures in the high 20’s and low 30’s. On the road to Wuyishan temperatures hovered steadily around 15 and 16. And of course the endless rain. The rain can be a bit of a nuisance at times but it’s also rather refreshing. And it does drape fine mists over the mountains which can create some lovely scenes.
At the end of the third day I arrived at Wuyishan. The following morning it rained so hard that I didn’t even bother to go to the park. The afternoon was better so I managed to get in a hike at Tianyoufeng, or, Heavenly Tour Peak, the centerpiece of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I had originally planned to visit Wuyishan during the national holiday in early October, but due to a change in work schedule I had to cancel. I am happy it worked out that way. It was busy enough trying to get up there on a non holiday Friday. I can’t imagine what it would have been like during the nation wide break. I shudder at the thought. Shudder…..
My bamboo raft river tour for the next morning was unfortunately cancelled, so I was unable to do one of the two main things I had planned while I was there. Again, a weather related misfortune. But regardless of the weather and the plans that it altered or cancelled, I would take the trip exactly as it was again tomorrow. As I said, a bad day riding beats most anything else I can think of.
